If you have water stains that extend across ceilings or run-down walls, the cause is probably a leaky roof.

To look for is any roof penetrations. Items that penetrate the roof are by far the most common source of leaks. In fact, it’s rare for leaks to develop in open areas of uninterrupted shingles, even on older roofs. Penetrations can include plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers, or anything else that projects through the roof.

If you have a leaky roof, you’d better fix it immediately, even if it doesn’t bother you much or you’re getting a new roof next year.

3. Remove Damaged Roof Vent
4. Replace Roof Vent
5. Tear Off Old Roofing Shingles
6. Remove the Old Roofing Paper
7. Mark the Deck Cut Area
8. Cut Away Damaged Roof Deck
9. Remove Roof Deck
10. Cut New Roof Deck Patch
11. Attach the Roof Deck Patch
12.  Lay Paper or Underlayment
13.  Run the First Row of Shingles
14.  Complete the Shingles

As most roofs are pitched, where the leak appeared on your ceiling and where it entered the roof are probably two different places.

• Look for Wet Spots on Sheathing or Rafters
• Check for Holes or Tears in the Flashing
