General rule
All roofing should be installed over a solid, sturdy roof deck and properly flashed at all valleys, wall intersections, and roof penetrations. Thirty-pound roofing felt (or equivalent underlayment per local codes) should install beneath the roofing. Per the manufacturer’s instructions, roofing nails should always be long enough to penetrate the decking by at least 3/4 inch.
Install properly
If it’s installed properly then the future of your roof is bright and long. But if a roof is improperly installed, your roof’s future will always lead to premature roof failure.
What causes an improperly installed roof?
The problems could show up the very first time it rains. Causes like poor workmanship, inadequate attic ventilation, improper nailing, and poor weather conditions during the installation will always lead to a roof failing well before its time.
Poor weather conditions during installation
For a roof to be installed correctly it must be done in dry weather. If a contractor comes out on a rainy day to start working on your roof, we can guarantee your new roof will have problems quickly. Under no circumstances should a roof be installed in the rain or in the snow.
Why is proper roof installation important?
Factors, like costing more in the long run, the life of the roof, and giving you peace of mind, will show why having your roof properly installed is critical.
Roof life
The life of your roof is simply the expected number of years you will get out of the roof system you choose. With a roof system being a costly investment, you should expect to get the full life out of it.
Improper nailing
The nailing of the shingles on your roof plays a bigger role than you’d expect. If the shingles are lifted and the nail heads are found laying sideways, then you know your roof was improperly installed. As long as the nails are driven in straight and with the right pressure they’ll hold firm.
